Major French symbolist poet and critic (1842–1898) whose work anticipated and inspired several revolutionary artistic schools of the early 20th century, such as Dadaism, Surrealism, and Futurism. Extremely rare 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Mallarme, signed and inscribed in the lower border in bold ink, “To my friend Leon Deschamps, SM.” Published by Nadar of Paris. Heavy toning and fading to the image, a large hole at the top edge and small tack hole to the bottom, the bottom of the albumen image beginning to peel from the mount, and soiling to the lower portion, otherwise very good condition.
