Three items: an ALS by James Russell Lowell, two pages on two adjoining sheets, December 12, 1862, in part: “I have written these trifles for you this afternoon, & only hope they may be worth more as autographs than they are as verses”; an AQS by Lowell sent with the preceding letter, in full: “A colourable pretext for the war. This is a Negro’s war, some say & write; / No war is black that does our honor white”; and an ALS by John Greenleaf Whittier, one page both sides, September 25, 1868, in part: “I was unable to find anything in my portfolio which would serve the purpose of the Fair.” In overall fine condition.
