Description

Oversized staff photo—‘DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN’

Rare oversized matte-finish 14 x 11 photo of Truman holding up the memorable ‘Dewey Defeats Truman’ issue of the Chicago Tribune, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To my good friend Merle Young, with kindest regards, Harry S. Truman.” In fine condition, with trivial creases and edge dings, and the signature and inscription slightly faded. Young was pointman for Truman’s vice president, Alben Barkley, and the husband of an assistant to President Truman’s secretary. In 1951, Young was implicated in the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) scandal, in which Young and two other Missouri Democrats—Truman aide Donald Dawson and DNC chairman William Boyle—were charged with influence peddling in the loans made by the RFC. An exceptional, large example of this iconic photograph intriguingly associated with a political scandal during Truman’s administration. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
