Description

Mitchell invites the legendary John Wayne to discuss “some exciting work on the frontiers of ‘inner space’”

TLS signed “Ed Mitchell,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 20, 1973. Letter to screen actor John Wayne, in full: “During my flight to the lunar surface with Alan Shepard on Apollo 14 I was indelibly impressed with a perspective of our planet that is different from the one we usually consider. I have reflected on that incredible panorama since the flight and have attempted to understand why a pragmatic astronaut like myself would suddenly turn his attention and his career from outer space to ‘inner space’ because of this experience. I would like to share with you some of my observations at a dinner I am tentatively planning to sponsor in Los Angeles on November 9, 1973. At the dinner I will introduce publicly my new organization, the Institute of Noetic Sciences, which is engaged in some exciting work on the frontiers of ‘inner space.’ Would you honor me by permitting me to discuss some of these ideas with you in the near future?” In fine condition, with notations in an unknown hand to upper right corner, and a pair of staple holes. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. A highly desirable correspondence between the Western screen icon and the sixth moonwalker. Pre-certified Steve Zarelli.
