Letter to Tom Burgoyne, in part: “My sincerest sympathy goes out to you on account of the loss of your eyesight; but that very loss enhances my admiration for the courage and success with which you have carried on. The fact that the poems you so kindly send me were written, as you say, in total darkness seems to me to give added proof of their sincerity.
