DS, one page both sides, 7.25 x 9.25, August 27, 1799. An oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States. In part: “I, Abner Bagley, do truly and sincerely acknowledge, testify and declare that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is, and of right ought to be a free sovereign and independent State: and I do swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the said Commonwealth, and that I will defend the same against traitorous conspiracies.” Reverse bears a second oath written and signed by Bagley in which he pledges to “impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent to me as Adjutant of the Battalion of Artillery, in the second Brigade, sixth Division of the Militia of the Commonwealth.” In fine condition, with a couple old repairs along horizontal folds and separations, and some scattered light toning.
