Description

Jose Antonio Remon Cantera

Panamanian police chief and politician (1908–1955) who served as president of Panama from 1952 until his mysterious assassination in 1955, when he came under machine gun fire at a racetrack. Rare TLS in Spanish, one page, 8.5 x 11, Republica de Panama presidential letterhead, December 30, 1953. Response to an American student. In part (translated): “With pleasure…I answer your attentive communication dated in LaRue, Ohio. My purpose in life is to learn and to work. I wish you every success in your studies.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, several tears and small areas of paper loss to edges, and scattered foxing and staining. Accompanied by an official transmittal envelope. The identity of Remon’s assassin and the reasoning behind it remain unresolved to this day, resulting in several conspiracy theories—though it may have been a simple internal coup, one theory holds that it was a CIA hit due to his interference in Panama canal negotiations, while another claims that he was killed on the orders of Lucky Luciano over a dispute involving a seized shipment of heroin. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
