Phillips Brooks

American clergyman (1835–1893) best known as the lyricist of the popular Christmas carol ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem.’ Lengthy AQS on an off-white 4.25 x 6 sheet, signed at the conclusion, “Phillips Brooks, February 22, 1886.” Brooks pens a religious quote, in full: “All truly consecrated men learn little by little that what they are consecrated to is not joy or sorrow but a divine idea & a profound obedience, which can find their full outward expression not in joy & not in sorrow but in a mysterious & inseparable blending of the two.” Matted and framed with a period portrait of Brooks to an overall size of 12.5 x 9.5. In fine condition, with toning to edges. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
