Description

Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau

French military officer (1725–1807) who made a substantial contribution to the American Revolution, including a leading role in the defeat of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Manuscript DS in French, signed “de Vimeur Rochambeau,” one page, 9 x 14, October 4, 1791. Untranslated document concerning the 78th regiment of infantry, approved at the conclusion by Rochambeau. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and expected document wear. After returning to France, Rochambeau led troops in the French Revolution, which began in 1789. In late 1791 he would be made a marshal of France and given command of the northern armies, but would resign shortly thereafter due to illness. A highly desirable war-dated piece from Rochambeau’s second revolution. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
