Description

Excessively rare Rousseau—“This is in memory of Heloise”

Important Swiss-French philosopher and writer who held that the individual is essentially good but usually corrupted by society (1712–1778). Rare unsigned handwritten manuscript in French, one page, 7.5 x 9.75, no date. A fragment from a manuscript related to a projected work on the history of women that Rousseau undertook at the insistence of his patron Mme. Dupin. In full (translated): “This is in memory of Heloise, learned in Greek that the nuns of the Paraclete are accustomed to the Greek office on the day of Pentecost.” The reference of this quote is written in the margin. In fine condition. One of Rousseau’s chief works was entitled Julie, or the New Heloise, which drew its name from the history of Heloise d’Argenteuil and Peter Abelard, a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. An exceedingly rare and intriguing piece. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
