Hu’s promotion of freedom of speech and press greatly influenced the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Glossy 7 x 5 photo, signed by Hu Yaobang and Holger Borner on the reverse in blue ballpoint and blue ink respectfully, with each adding a 1985 date. Hu adds, “1985. 5.22,” and Borner adds, “6.5.85.” In fine condition, with a few small spots of toning to reverse of photo and minor brushing to Borner’s signature. At the time this photo was signed, Germany was China's number one European trade partner: the total value of bilateral trade between the two countries that year exceeded three billion.
