ALS, one page, 8.25 x 13.5, July 7, 1857. Letter to Charles W. Pickering. In part: “In obedience to regulations, the engines were exercised yesterday…and were found to be in good order and ready for use.” Also includes a 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of his brother, William D. Porter, signed and inscribed on the reverse by William, “Miss Wood, with compliments of Commodore Porter, U. S. N., June 11, 1863.” Some dampstaining to reverse of the carte-de-visite, otherwise overall fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of David D. Porter and George G.
