Union general (1831–1906) who served as army commander in Sherman’s Atlanta campaign and who later became general-in-chief of the army. LS signed “J. M. Schofield,” one page, lightly-lined, 7 x 8.5, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, November 9, 1889. Letter to Colonel Horatio King at the Society of the Army of the Potomac. In full: “I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the Report of the Twentieth Annual Re-Union of the Society of the Army of the Potomac, for which please accept my thanks”; and a large ink signature, “Jno. M. Schofieldm Maj. Genl. U. S. A.,” on an off-white 3.5 x 1.75 card. Intersecting folds and toning to left side of letter, and light stains to signed card, otherwise fine condition.
