Description

Charles Babbage

Pioneering British mathematician and mechanical engineer (1791–1871) whose Difference Engine and Analytical Engine are generally acknowledged as the first programmable computers. Uncommon LS signed “C. Babbage,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.25, January 30, 1824. In part: “Mr Cesar Moreau, Vice Consul of the French government in London and a member of several learned societies has inquired of me if there would be any possibility of getting instructions for a young protegee of his in your business and has requested a note of introduction to you. I know that a few words from yourself would save much time in the transference of information and therefore take the liberty of introducing him to you. I have been so much occupied lately that I have been unable to pay you a visit to examine your new telescope for distances.” Double-matted and framed with a portrait of Babbage to an overall size of 17.5 x 14.5, with a window on the reverse for viewing the front of the letter. In fine condition, with light scattered stains, and show-through from writing on reverse. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
