(Walt Disney Studios, 1959) Original concept storyboard painting by Eyvind Earle featuring the castle from Sleeping Beauty, showing the surrounding landscape with the castle in the distance. Accomplished in tempera on 15.25 x 6 artist’s board, signed in the lower right corner by Earle. In fine condition. Disney artist Eyvind Earle was Sleeping Beauty's production designer, and Disney gave him a significant amount of freedom in designing the settings and selecting colors for the film. Earle also painted the majority of the backgrounds himself. The elaborate paintings usually took seven to ten days to paint; by contrast, a typical animation background took only one workday to complete. Disney's decision to give Earle so much artistic freedom was not popular among the Disney animators, who had previously exercised some influence over the style of their characters and settings.
