American author (1836–1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story ‘The Outcasts of Poker Flat.’ ALS, two pages, 3.5 x 5.75, personal letterhead, May 16, 1887. Letter to Miss Alexandre, in part: “This is not the photograph I promised you, but one that was taken…as much as two [years] ago. I find that the negative of the one I meant for you has been sent…for engraving, and consequently I cannot get you a copy until it is returned. Until then will you kindly accept this…” Double-matted and framed with a half-length picture of Harte to an overall size of 20.25 x 13.5. In fine condition, with minor soiling and some scattered spots of discoloration. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
