Description

Rare military appointment from three days after Lincoln’s death

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 19.5, April 18, 1865. President Johnson appoints Evan Miles as "Captain of the Twelfth Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." Crisply signed at the conclusion by President Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The blue seal affixed to the upper left remains intact with several creases. Intersecting folds, overall wrinkling, a stain to the lower left, and show-through along the top edge from mounting remnants to reverse, otherwise fine condition. Dating to just three days after the death of Abraham Lincoln, this is certainly one of the earliest documents President Johnson signed after his transition into office. As Johnson favored a stamp due to an injured hand, his presidential documents are scarce in general; as an attractive military appointment from the start of his term, this is a highly desirable piece.
