TLS as first lady, one page, 6 x 9.25, White House letterhead, November 11, 1935. Letter to Mrs. Sidney Sherwood. In part: “I will send along Mr. Denniston’s application for the Florida Canal…I will also look into the Civil Service examination and find out what has happened on that…I do not think they will try to move mountain people out except where it is perfectly obvious that they cannot possibly make a living on the land, but of course the people themselves do not like to move and think they will succeed in scratching along even when it is certain that they cannot.” A letter from Sherwood is penned on the reverse, forwarding this letter to Denniston. In fine condition, with light foxing and toning to upper portion, and trivial paper loss to upper right corner. One of the departments established by FDR’s New Deal was the Resettlement Administration, which operated between April 1935 and December 1936 to relocate struggling urban and rural families to communities planned by the federal government. The first such community was built in Arthurdale, West Virginia, which became one of Mrs. Roosevelt’s pet projects and chief priorities early in her husband’s administration.
