Carnegie’s reference is to Henry Morton, president of the Stevens Institute of Technology; Carnegie was a major benefactor of the institution, and between 1899 and 1903 he donated nearly $300,000 for the construction and development of an engineering laboratory; Alexander Crombie Humphreys, the recipient of this letter, succeeded Morton as president of the school within weeks of this correspondence.
