Description

Scarce late-term commission for an officer who would later serve with distinction in the Peninsular Campaign

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 14.75 x 18.5, February 26, 1861. President Buchanan appoints Alfred T. Smith a “Second Lieutenant in the Eighth Regiment of Infantry in service to the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of War Joseph Holt. Triple-matted and framed to an overall size of 20.5 x 24.5. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, light wrinkling and creasing, and Buchanan’s signature and handwritten portions of the document a few shades light, but completely legible. The green seal is slightly worn, but intact. Smith would be promoted again a year later for his service during the Peninsular Campaign. Issued only five days before Buchanan left office, this is an excellent example of an uncommon military appointment from the pre-Civil War president. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
