Description

Andrew Johnson

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 13.75 x 9.5, July 18, 1865. President Johnson appoints Edward H. Shelly as “Deputy Postmaster, at Rome, in the State of New York.” Crisply signed at the conclusion by President Johnson and countersigned by Acting Secretary of State William Hunter. The embossed white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains fully intact. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), scattered creases, and toning and adhesive remnants to edges. This document dates to four months after Johnson assumed the presidency following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln; Secretary of State William H. Seward survived an attempt on his life on the same day but required a lengthy recovery from his wounds. With Seward unable to discharge the duties of his office during this period, William Hunter acted in his place. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
