Description

Stan Laurel

TLS signed “Stan,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, August 7, 1952. Letter regarding his recent work. In part: “Ben Shipman was over, but it is not possible for us to stay here after October, due to the tax situation—we can’t pay tax in both countries, so the Palladium Pantomime deal is off as we can’t return here for six months. I am very disappointed, but nothing can be done about it…We could go to Australia & South Africa but can’t take dollars out, so that no use. Ben Shipman phoned me from Santiago Chile last week, that have offered us a lot of time in South America, but they are Big Night Clubs, we are not suitable for those places.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, scattered creases, and a rusty paperclip mark to the upper right. Shipman was a friend and the business manager for Laurel and Hardy, who arranged for them to perform stage shows in Europe during 1952, performing a sketch Laurel had written called ‘A Spot of Trouble.’ An interesting letter offering an insider’s perspective of the trials and tribulations of the showbiz world. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
