Description

Horace Greeley

ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 21, 1848. Letter to a gentleman on a proposed vote-counting device for Congress. In part: “The subject of a mechanical contrivance for taking the yeas and nays…is still frequently spoken of. One or two plans are now under consideration…but there are many adverse…some stating a Constitutional difficulty; others fearing they should not know how to vote if they did not hear others vote before them.” Includes the original hand-addressed and free-franked mailing envelope, franked in the upper left, “Free—H. Greeley, M. C.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature) and scattered small stains to the letter, and a small tear affecting the end of the franking signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
