ALS, one page, 5 x 8, March 26, 1916. Letter to Minerva Hayes. In part: “Your story of your pet chipmunks is very interesting. It throws new light on the habits of the little rodents. A paper of mine a year or two ago called ‘Under the Apple Trees’ dealt almost entirely with a chipmunk…My first chipmunk of the season, I saw this morning. He was running briskly over the snow. If you discover any more traits or habits in your chipmunks I shall be glad to hear about them.” In fine condition, with light toning and a chip to the top edge. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Burroughs’s hand. Intriguing content demonstrating Burroughs’s ever-present desire to observe the natural world.
