Italian Pope (1881–1963), born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who ascended the papal throne in 1958 and served until his death. As the guiding force behind the historic Second Vatican Council, John ushered in the most sweeping reforms the Catholic Church had undergone in centuries. Rare color glossy 6.75 x 9.5 photo of Pope John XXIII, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, “Joannes XXIII,” and dated “August 2, 1960.” The lower border also bears an embossed papal seal. A crease and paperclip impression to top edge, a subtle overall block of toning, and uniformly trimmed edges, otherwise fine condition. All examples of John XXIII we have previously offered were signed as cardinal using his given name, making this an especially rare piece; it is also the only color photo of him that we have ever encountered.
