Albert Gallatin

Politician and financial genius (1761–1849) responsible for the formation of what is now known as the Ways and Means Committee. LS, one page both sides, 8 x 10, August 18, 1801. Letter to Israel Whelen. In part: “I have returned the counterpart of the contract with Messrs Gurney & Smith and Jehu Hollingsworth & Co…and directed the Treasurer to remit to them Eighteen thousand dollars, in a bill on George Simpson being for two thirds of the estimated amount of the shipment made by them.” The address panel on the reverse of the second integral page is filled out in another hand but free franked at the top by Gallatin, “Albert Gallatin.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and subtle toning.
