Scarce matte-finish sepia 8 x 10 photo of Chaney peering out from behind his hat, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Ralph D. Blumenfeld, most sincerely, Lon Chaney.” In fine, clean condition, with some old tape remnants to reverse. Directed by Tod Browning—whose other credits include Dracula and the cult classic Freaks—the 1927 silent horror film The Unknown starred Chaney as the demented armless knife thrower Alonzo, desperate to win the love of his partner, Nanon (played by Joan Crawford). His intense and twisted performance is regarded by many as his finest, making this an exceptionally desirable photo. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
