American playwright, screenwriter, and director (1906–1963) known for his powerful works of the Depression era, including Waiting for Lefty and Golden Boy. TLS signed “Clifford O.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, 20th Century Fox Film Corporation letterhead, October 6, 1958. Letter to a friend. In part: “No, I don’t want to sell the drawing, for you remember how I had to sell about twenty Klees because I was broke. That left me with only about thirty…However, if you wanted to make a fair trade on the basis of some other Klee piece I should be glad to listen. You must be rich in Klees…If you don’t want to make a trade please send the drawing to me at the above address. The only thing I have against it is that it often used to remind me of my first wife, Luise Rainer—she was in part that sort of post-bellum German woman.” The recipient’s retained carbon copy of his response is stapled to the upper left. In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
