William M. ‘Boss’ Tweed

Politician (1823–1878) most notable for being the ‘boss’ of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in the politics of 19th century New York City. Partly-printed DS, signed “W. M. Tweed,” one page, 8.5 x 13.75, November 25, 1863. Receipt for a payment of $45.23 for a large purchase of supplies including “21 axe handles,” “1 shackle bar,” “2 shovels,” and “4 sledge hammers.” Signed at the bottom by Tweed as deputy street commissioner. Tape-repaired partial separation to one storage fold, light toning, and a small area of paper loss to upper left corner, otherwise fine condition. RR Auction COA.
