TLS signed “Jerry Ford,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Congress of the United States letterhead, March 30, 1971. Letter to Gerald Solanics. In part: “As you know, both the House and the Senate agreed with you and have voted to delete funds for continuation of the work on the prototypes for this fiscal year. I do not know precisely what will now happen, but I hope that in the long run the national interest is served. I was truly disappointed that the Congress took the action it did. I hope that eventually the whole matter will be resolved in the best interests of our country.” In fine condition. After a decade of work on America’s first supersonic transport (SST), Boeing had still not completed its prototypes for the massive plane and was losing the support of the US government, who had been funding it since Kennedy’s presidency. The project had grown considerably larger than anticipated and was receiving intense negative publicity by the start of the 1970s, and in the spring of 1971, both the House and Senate agreed to cancel the project. Worried about mass unemployment in the aviation sector, Ford had been a strong proponent of the cause, and as shown in this letter, was greatly disappointed by the decision.
