American politician (1769–1828) who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. ALS, one page, 7.75 x 7.25, July 30, 1827. Letter of recommendation. In part: “Mr. Josiah Morse, who will hand you this letter, is desirous of an interview with your Excellency: He formerly belonged to Massachusetts and is now a respectable inhabitant of Chautauqua County in this State.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some show-through from docketing to reverse (a portion of which is in the hand of noted collector W.
