ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.5, June 24, 1848. Letter to John M. Read, a founder of the Republican party and Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In part: “I have again tried to obtain the discharge of W. Cromley; but this cannot at present be procured. They tell me at the Department that so many soldiers have been enlisted for the term of the war, the rank & file of the old regiments will be reduced to about 6000 men; & that they cannot discharge any of these without some good reason. They say, they have had to adopt this rule from necessity.” Affixed by the left edge to an off-white 10.25 x 12 sheet. In fine condition.
