In full: “I appreciate very much your letter of the eighteenth and the enclosed invitation to attend a presentation of the London Film ‘Breaking the Sound Barrier.’ I wish I could come but Mrs. Truman and I are tied up and will not be able to be present, much to our regret.” In fine condition. The film, a fictionalized story of British aerospace engineers solving the problem of supersonic flight, was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning the Oscar for Best Sound, Recording. Its Washington Premiere, by invitation only, was on the evening of November 25, 1952, held ‘In Honor of the U.S. Air Force’ at the Playhouse Theatre, managed by Wagner.
