Description

“The Mohave has always been a favorite place of mine since I walked out of there as a kid”

TLS signed “Louis,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, November 9, 1974. Letter to “Bill.” In part: “The Mohave has always been a favorite place of mine since I walked out of there as a kid. When I was sixteen, (passing as twenty-two) I was broke at one time, in Barstow. I hired out to an old man to do the assessment work on a claim of his in the Owl Head Mts. right south of Wingate Pass at the end of Death Valley. He drove me in and left me there with a barrel of water from the spring just south of the claim (Owl’s Head Spring, I believe it was) and said he would drive me out and pick me up. If he did not come I could drive out an old Model-T he had sitting there. He filled it with gas, just in case, then took off. I did my work and when he did not show up, wound up the Model-T and started out. I did not get halfway to the spring before I broke an axle and had to walk out to Barstow. It was mid-September, as I recall, and pretty hot…I’ll be busy in the east for a while now, and then back to the west again. The next one in the east will be on the Revolutionary War. I also want to do one on the three young British sailors put ashore from John Hawkins ship after the battle with the Spanish who then walked from the Gulf Coast to Nova Scotia in 15 months…this was 1568–69!!! Their names were David Ingram, Richard Browne, and Richard Twide.” In fine condition. RR Auction COA.
