Beautifully illuminated original vellum leaf from a German prayer book manuscript, one page both sides, 3.75 x 5.5, circa 1600. One side of the leaf features a colorful full-page miniature painting depicting the flagellation of Christ, showing Pontius Pilate in the background giving orders for Christ to be flogged with a lead-tipped whip. The opposite side bears a smaller painting that shows the instruments used in the Passion of the Christ, surrounded by writing in Latin and German. Matted to an overall size of 11 x 14 with both sides visible. In fine condition, with some trivial flaking to paint. RR Auction COA.
