"“I do really believe I’ve turned into an IBM, typing so much every day”"

American novelist (1892–1977) best known as the author of such crime/noir classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. TLS signed “Jim,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, November 3, 1963. Letter to Ethel Duke. In part: “I keep looking at my thumbnail to see it if [sic] shines, because I do really believe I’ve turned into an IBM, typing so much every day, just a dialogue machine. More work for Swanson, that’s all.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), staple holes to upper left, and some soiling to the lower right.
