British archaeologist and Egyptologist (1874–1939) whose 1922 discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt’s ‘Valley of the Kings’ proved to be one of the signal events in the history of archaeology. Magnificent vintage matte-finish 7.5 x 9.75 three-quarter-length portrait of Carter sitting in a chair, affixed to its original 9.75 x 12.5 Harris & Ewing photographer’s mount, signed in the lower left in black ink, “Howard Carter, 1924.” In fine condition, with mild silvering to dark areas of the image. In 1924, Carter gave 24 lectures about King Tut in the United States, and spoke in Washington, D. C. on May 8–9, when he almost certainly sat for this portrait at the Harris and Ewing studio. Carter returned to England that summer and returned to Cairo in December. This is the only Howard Carter signed photo we have ever encountered, and its bold signature and large size make it a superlative and probably unique specimen.
