Postal appointment for a former Union officer who fought at Chickamauga

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17.5 x 10.75, March 3, 1871. President Grant appoints H. P. Van Cleve to be “Deputy Postmaster at Saint Anthony’s Falls in the State of Minnesota.” Signed at the conclusion by Grant and countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. Attractively cloth-matted and framed with a portrait of Grant and a biographical caption to an overall size of 35 x 24. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some slight mirroring of text around signatures. The white wafer seal is crisp and intact. Oversized.
