One of Napoleon’s favorite Marshals and his chief of staff (1753–1815). LS in French, signed “Alexandre,” one page, 8 x 9.5, Orcha, November 20, 1872. Significant letter to Marshal Lefevre, Duke of Dantzig, written from the Russian city of Orcha during the retreat from the disastrous campaign of Russia. Bertier sends Napoleon’s proclamation for publication and asks Lefevre to guarantee its enforcement. Less than one week later, Napoleon would concede defeat and announce his retreat, crossing the river Berezina; the campaign remains in the French collective memory as an unprecedented immense disaster. In fine condition, with some mild toning and creasing along right edge. RR Auction COA.
