Description

J. Edgar Hoover

Bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Courtney R. Cooper, payable to J. Edgar Hoover for $235.34, September 22, 1939, and endorsed on the reverse by Hoover, “J. Edgar Hoover.” In fine condition, with a central vertical fold and expected bank stamps and cancellation holes. Courtney Ryley Cooper was a writer who published over 30 books, including many on the topic of crime—Hoover greatly admired Cooper, calling him ‘the best informed man on crime in the US.’ It is also thought that Cooper served as a ghostwriter for some of Hoover’s publications, including magazine articles and the 1938 book Persons in Hiding. This is the first time we have ever offered a Hoover check in any form. RR Auction COA.
