British general (1799–1871) and hero of the Crimean War leading the charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. Hand-addressed free franked mailing panel, 4.5 x 3, addressed in Scarlett’s hand to “Mrs. Duff, Wolseley Terrace, Cheltenham,” dated at the top, “London, April one 1839,” and franked in the lower left, “J. Yorke Scarlett.” Panel also bears a large “Free” stamp, dated April 1, 1839. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning. RR Auction COA.
