TLS, one page, 7 x 11, personal letterhead, January 29, 1937. Letter to an admirer. In part: “Thank you so much for your letter and thank you, too, for the letter ‘from the trenches’…I found the description of the Civil War dugouts of great interest. Of course I couldn’t help feeling a wicked pleasure over the more personal items of the letter, for they showed beyond a doubt that the people of our grandparents’ generation were just as prone to backbiting as are the unregenerates of this day. You were more than kind to write so fine a letter about ‘Gone With the Wind.’ I hope that some parts of the description of the background brought you back to the South that you left years ago.” In fine condition. A choice letter about her legendary Southern novel that acknowledges one of the elements that led to its popularity—the romanticized, nostalgic vision of her “grandparents’” South.
