Description

Stephen Wise

Reform rabbi and Zionist leader (1874–1949). Three one-page TLSs, various sizes, all on Free Synagogue letterhead, dating from 1929–1931, all to the same recipient. One letter, dated December 12, 1929, reads, in part, “I am delighted to think that, as a collector of autographs, you desire to place my signature in your collection, where I hope it will long and safely repose…As for a sentiment, I do not know what to say excepting I recall that the remark attributed to General Armstrong, as he faced President Johnson in his Cabinet—that the business of America is to translate the impossible into the possible. I think that my people have had a genius for the same sort of thing, transfiguring not realities into ideals, but transforming ideals into realities.” At the bottom of the page, Wise writes a brief phrase in Hebrew, translating it underneath, as “The Priestly Benediction.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds to each page. RR Auction COA.
