Description

Publishing agreement for the Sunset Boulevard screewriter’s first novel, 1920’s Counsel of the Ungodly

DS one page both sides, 9.25 x 14.75, February 21, 1920. Agreement between Brackett and D. Appleton and Company for the publication of “a work, which is entitled ‘The Consal [sic] of the Ungodly.’” Brackett signs off on the fact that this “has not heretofore been published in book form,” with Appleton agreeing to “pay the author or his legal representatives, ten (10) per cent on the catalogue (retail) price, cloth style for each copy thereof sold.” He also gives permission for the book to be published in foreign countries. Typed additions to the conclusion allow for royalties of 10% to Brackett should cheaper versions be printed, as well as a royalty of 50% payable if the book sells less than 500 copies in its first year. Nicely signed at the conclusion by Brackett and the publishing company’s president. In fine condition.

The first of his five novels, Counsel of the Ungodly was released in 1920, the same year he acquired his law degree and began practicing. In 1925 he became a a drama critic for the New Yorker, eventually leaving New York for Hollywood to become a screenwriter for Paramount. While at Paramount, Brackett enjoyed an amazing partnership with director Billy Wilder, collaborating on such classics as Ninotchka, The Lost Weekend, and perhaps their greatest achievement, Sunset Boulevard, for which Brackett won one of his three of his Academy Awards. During his time, he wrote or produced 40 films during his career, while also serving as president of the Screen Writers Guild as well as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The earliest professional document for Brackett we have ever seen, and one which began an amazing, and award-winning, Hollywood career. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
