Description

A 14 year-old Clarke inscribes her first studio portrait to her father

Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 Stafford Meeson photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “For Daddy—Here I am, in my first New York production and they say my curls have got to be cut off. Too kiddish. Love xxx Mae xxx, 1924.” Clarke also notates the reverse, “1924—(14 yrs. old) in August. Miss Mae Clarke,” adding the studio information as well. Two missing corner tips, scattered edge wear and creasing, and some silvering to background, otherwise fine condition. Photo originates from Clarke’s estate, was depicted in her autobiography on page 108, and is by far the earliest portrait we have ever seen or offered. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
