Description

“The Near East is wonderfully beautiful and fascinating, but horribly depressing”

ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, August 13, 1954. Letter to Dr. Ludwig von Bertalanffy. In part: “My wife and I have had an interesting and profitable spring and summer—first in France, then in Egypt, Lebanon, Jerusalem, Cyprus and Greece; then in Rome, & finally in France again and now in England. The Near East is wonderfully beautiful and fascinating, but horribly depressing. Poverty, nationalism, overpopulation and ineptitude conspire to create a problem that is probably insoluble—at any rate in the immediately foreseeable future.” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Huxley’s hand. RR Auction COA.
