TLS signed “Alec,” one page, 7.75 x 10, Wright-Fleming Institute of Microbiology letterhead, December 21, 1948. Letter to George Wells of the American Optical Company. In part: “I have not written earlier to thank you for the gift of the Spencer Phase Contrast Microscope outfit. I received it a little time ago and I have spent almost all my time since in playing with it. It is a wonderful piece of apparatus and I am hoping to demonstrate, by means of phase contrast at the Society of Pathology and Bacteriology…some things which I am sure the bacteriologists in this country have never seen…I can assure you I have never had a plaything which pleased me so much. I say ‘plaything’ but of course that is not quite right, for it is an instrument which allows us to observe living things in a way which we could never have been able to do and it is bound to lead to great results.” Double-cloth-matted and framed with a small photo and a small plaque to an overall size of 20.25 x 18. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, two staple holes, and an office stamp and pencil notation. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
