Description

Yale University: Charles Seymour

Historian and academic (1885–1963) who served as president of Yale University from 1937–1951. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 9.25, Yale University stationery, April 22, 1941, in full: “I beg to acknowledge your letter of March nineteenth with apologies for this long delay in replying. I enclose a comment on Horace Mann as you suggest. I hope that it will seem adequate to you.” Also included are Seymour’s typed comments on Mann, one page, in part: “Horace Mann revived the principle of a common school education for all. By his energy and self-sacrifice, he gave new life to that principle and ultimately compelled its acceptance in every state of the Union. To Horace Mann we owe a deep obligation as democracy confronts the greatest crisis in history, for we can oppose the forces of reaction with a mass of educated citizens.” In fine condition, with punch holes to left edge of letter.
