Description

The image that inspired the ‘Buffalo nickel’

Blackfoot chief (1872–1934) best known for the durable though still-controversial claim that he served as one of models for sculptor James Earle Fraser in creating the composite Native American portrait on the ‘Buffalo’ nickel. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 portrait of Two Guns White Calf in profile, signed in fountain pen using his three-character pictogram of two rifles and a horned calf. Also signed in the lower right by photographer Gene Garrett of Minneapolis. In fine condition, with reinforced binder holes to left border. The portrait used as the basis for the Buffalo nickel is generally attributed to photographer T. J. Hileman; this is the exact same image, but with the chief’s braid artistically modified from the original, presumably by Garrett. An incredible and historically significant photograph. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
