Description

At the end of his breakthrough year in 1956, Elvis cuts a four figure check for furniture shortly before buying Graceland

Universal check, 7.5 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Presley, “E. A. Presley,” payable to Furniture by Fleming for $1056.06, December 8, 1956. Elvis also adds the bank name and address to the top, “National Bank of Commerce, Main Office Branch, Memphis, Tennessee.” Double-matted and shadow-boxed and framed with a color photo of Elvis, a Mattel Elvis doll in its original packaging, and a ticket for his June 18, 1977, performance in Kansas City, Missouri, to an overall size of 26.75 x 23.5. In fine condition, with cancellation holes to left side and light show-through from a stamp on reverse. Just three months after purchasing furniture, Presley plunked down a $1000 cash deposit on Graceland on March 19, 1957. The year of 1956 began Presley’s commercial breakthrough as he appeared on multiple television shows, starred in his first movie, released several of his classic hits, and enjoyed an unprecedented windfall of millions of dollars from his records and merchandising. Presley checks from this early in his career are very rare. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RR Auction COA.
